well blandness is the same as ugly to me. They have nothing remotely interesting or nice-looking about them, especially the boys. But that's the new hot.

the only reason they are cast is because disney finds them marketable. Disney only cast Zac because they know that they could make him the next tween heart-throb, and Vanessa because...well....she's attractive in Disney's eyes I guess.
shareAttractiveness has a lot to do with popularity. Zach portraying the sweet down to Earth high school jock, makes all of the pre-teen girls fall head over hills for him. The exaggerated amount of attention that these actors go due to the film, made even "hot". It's a proven fact that popularity will make someone look better. Just look at all of the "beautiful" people in Hollywood, if you were to see them on the streets while they were not famous at all, then they would not be that appealing at all. They would just be average looking people. But the fame, money and popularity makes them interesting and attractive.
Zach was considered a nerd and unattractive in school. He has even said that numerous times. He did a few acting projects before and no one was falling head over hills for him. If he had not done High School Musical, he would probably still be another struggling actor in Hollywood. But since HSM brought him so much attention, he's been able to get better roles and has been considered one of the most beautiful teen idols of that year.
Zac had that gap in his teeth in his early days, but he got that fixed.
