First Coen Brothers Film I disliked

I can rattle off at least 8 Coen brothers movies that I really, really liked.

This is the only one I've seen so far that I didn't enjoy.

I liked the movie-making aspect, the shots, the sets, the wardrobe, the homage to big-screen cinema, the throwbacks to the era of Communist infiltration of the film industry... cool... the synchronized swimming and big stage dance numbers, even quick scenes of old Western stuff. Great stuff...

But, that stuff doesn't make a movie entertaining. It makes an entertaining movie great. This movie didn't have enough real entertainment to use the kindling of sets, wardrobes, and throwbacks to great effect.

I was excited to see this, and it dropped me flat. I'll see other Coen brothers movies, but, not without waiting around to read some reviews first.

The audience I was with enjoyed it. Quite a few sat through the credits. My companion said it was the best Coen Brothers movie she'd seen. So maybe it's just not your personal taste.

Yeah. We were, unsurprisingly, discussing my personal taste here in my forum post about my opinion of this movie.

Did you mistake my post for "This film is universally, objectively poor and no one is allowed to like it."?

I take it you've never seen Intolerable Cruelty? It's considered by many Coen fans to be the worst, possibly the only truly terrible Coens film there is.
