This movie reminded me a lot of Sleepers and Basketball Diaries, not so much the plot, but the overall atmosphere. Did anyone else get that? What other movies did it remind you of?

Definitely both of the aboved mentioned. Just about kids who don't give a damn and walk around town with nothing on their minds. I love it!

The fat man walks alone.

Not exactly the same kind of film, but Do The Right Thing sort of has that same neighborhood type feel to it.

reply

the way it was made reminded me of all the real girls.

The closest resemblance this film had to any other I have seen was "Kids" (1995)

Its about a group of your kids growing up in a similar area just, well, being kids. Doing drugs, having sex, getting into trouble etc. It doesn't have as much meaning as 'Recognizing You Saints' film but its still enjoyable, I recommend it if you liked this one.

Yeah, good picks, but I would say Sleepers the most. Both films are about Guys from tha neighborhood reminiscing on their adolescence in NYC.

this movie reminded me a lot of "Raising Victor Vargas", in fact the same girl appeared in both films.

it kind of reminded me of "A Bronx Tale" maybe that has alot to do with Chazz being in the movie and it taking place in NY, but i think the feel of the movie was there too.

Damnit, he put my stapler in jello again. .

Mean Streets

this was a great great film. and yea it reminded me of TONS of other urban NYC coming of age, return to my roots, flash back/flash forward, "tough sounding white kids doing drugs and having sex and cussing" dramas:

Scorsese's "Mean Streets"

Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing"

Spike Lee's "25th Hour"

Saturday Night Fever

A Bronx Tale

Sleepers

The Basketball Diaries

Kids

Ahh, the smell of sun, popcorn, pretty girls, & a michael bay movie. Another summer in the USA

Spike Lee! YES!!!
The whole time I was watching this film I kept thinking how much it felt like a Spike Lee film. Not just the fact that it was set in the Bronx, but the whole cultural melting pot, the occassional look and talk to camera... the fact that most of the time it was just kids not doing a whole lot...

Definately Spike Lee...

It kinda reminded me of "Shrek" with an Austin Powers vibe.

It wasnt set in NY, but this movie somewhat reminded me of Where The Day Takes You.. about a bunch of runaway kids living on the streets of LA.
That movie had a great ensemble of cast members as well.. Will Smith, Dermot Mulroney, Lara Flynn Boyle, Balthazar Getty, Sean Astin, and Ricki Lake.

the scene where young Dita visits the drug dealer and he's listening to his headphones seems like a really bad rip off of Dirk Diggler going to Rahad Jacksons house from Boogie Nights.
