And they all need to go...

come on...this film sucked. Nobody is gonna tell me that rosario dawson and robert downey are the same age! I hate when they do that shiitre. Like we're stupid or somehting. They get names and throw them in whether they;re right or not. It totally ruined the whole film for me. it went from this decent flick to something completely unbelievable cause I was suddenly reminded that I was watching a movie. why do they do that. why?

reply

I watched this movie and it didn't even come to mind until i saw this post. I think your jsut looking into the movie too much. It's just soemthing that happens and most people dont notice and your saying that little detail ruined the entire movie. Give me a break jsut wawtch the move and stop picking away at every little detail.

reply

The fact that you believe that Rosario Dawson and Robert Downey Jr. ruined the entire film shows a lot. Like the fact that you didn't get the movie at all. This movie was meant to make you feel something. They gave the roles to actors who could portray that feeling and do it well. They didn't care whether you think Robert Downey Jr. looks like Shia or that the older characters look similar enough in age. All of the actors did a fantastic job and this movie contained some of the most intense scenes that I have seen in years.

reply

once again it seems guitar god knows what he's talking about. i agree, this movie was meant to prove a point and be taken with what u make it, if you don't get it then your not smart enough to get it and of course you're not gonna like it

reply

It's an uncomfortable film to watch in a lot of ways. Don't confuse uncomfortable with bad.

reply

I didn't witness any over acting but it was difficult to picture Dawson(27), Downey Jr.(42) and Eric Roberts(51) all the same age when its painfully apparent that they are everything but the same age. I still tried to keep focused on the plot and point of the movie which worked for me. I enjoyed this film. Channing Tatum was a good cast as the Mark Walberg, Basketball Diaries-like Antonio. I never gave him much credit because of that dance movie which I'll only see if I'm being tortured by terrorists...even then they would have to remove my eyelids or something.

reply

Maybe the differences in age were cast purposefully. Dawson's Laurie is still young because she never left Astoria. Robert's Antonio is old as hell because he lived the majority of his life at Riker's. Downey's Dito is more in between because he got the hell out of Astoria so he could travel, etc. Read the book. I could be way off the mark, and the age differences are the result of complete casting negligence, but I'd like to think my interpretation holds merit in an artistic film such as this.

reply

I think you are right on, Beautyonfire. That is exactly how I interpret it. Laurie is happy, therefore she looks youthful. She has a son that she obviously loves. Antonio looks like he's been through the ringer - because he has. And Dito looks his age because he got out in time...

I know a ton of people who don't look their age. Living a hard life will definitely leave it's mark.

reply

Antonio was older than the others, wasn't he? He wasn't at school (was his brother Giuseppe? I think he was, not sure). Anyway I don't think its wrong to think that they, Rosario Dawson and Robert Downey Jr., could be the same age. Roberts is suppose to look aged because of his poor life/health but it was a little far.

reply

So what does your complain have to do with overacting at all.

Please tell me you are not waving your hand in front of my face.

reply

Antonio is years older than Dito in the book and in real life.

reply

Why is everyone making out that 'bsgrules-1' is somehow stupid just because they think that its not believable that Rosario Dawson and Robert Downey Junior/Eric Roberts are the same age??!! Come on!! Theres no way thats believable and it just shows carelessness...basically Downey-Junior (who I love btw) wanted to be in the movie as he discovered the book!! The real Dito talks about the casting in the making of and he was unhappy with almost all of the casting!! I have to say his instincts were right!

I Concur.

Die Hard 4 was good.
The Bourne Ultimatum was superb.

reply

I must admit that Rosario and Robert had no chemistry whatsoever. I'm glad they didn't have a lot of screen time together. But, I like both actors individually. Maybe they should have gotten Penelope Cruz or Salma Hayek.

I found the age they played very much believable, I didn't even think about it. I thought the chemistry between downey jr. and dawson was perfect, it just showed how much they had grown apart.

reply

I can't believe the parents aged 20 years, I think they used make-up. Movie ruined.

reply

So, bsgrules, was it overacting or bad casting? The fact that you can't even accurately state what you found wrong with this movie shows a lot.

reply

You know, Vinny, that's actually a really good point. I guess bad casting. I don't know what you think that shows but its funny that you said I can't "accurately state what I found wrong" yet for you "shows a lot" is okay. What is hard for me is that I like all of those actors. It just takes me out of the believability of a movie when there is no way in hell those people were the same age. Come On those of you who think its okay! One of the dudes posted the difference between Eric Roberts and Rosario. Its like 30 years! Give ME a break. Its almost as bad as Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones Douglas Smith Miller Jackson ect. Gross! I digest. I'll admit, I think I would have really liked it if I was able to get into it. Just couldn't do it because they didn't let me suspend my reality as it were.

reply

Dianne Wiest, and Shia Labeouf were good. The rest of the cast was either over the top, unbelievable, or just plain rubbish. Especially the guy who played Antonio, he was AWFUL!

It's okay for actors to play characters different from the actor, they're acting.
