Amazing casting

I bought the DVD recently, and I keep watching certain scenes over and over. I just love the whole cast. Of course, all the bigger names in it are great, but I think the whole ensemble is just fantastic, including all the neighborhood kids that have supporting roles. I love how they cast such authentic-looking kids. The girls don't have a Hollywood glamour look (although they're all quite pretty), and they really seem like they could be a part of that particular neighborhood. And just the way everyone interacts with each other is great.

I think my favorite scene is the "Memories" scene (that's how it's titled on the DVD) when all the kids say a sentence or two to the camera about who they are.

I love when Shia lets go of every single self-imposed boundary and shows his audience a real human being (in the shower scene of course). My lungs tighten up every time I watch it- it is so moving... awwwww...........

I don't really like the Memories bit... sort of takes me out of the story. But then maybe I'd like it more if I'd read the book.

Agree with the exception of Eric Roberts. Antonio got smaller with age in prison and lost his accent.

I agree. I also think that Eric Roberts and Robert Downey Jr. had close to no chemistry in the prison scene.
They really should've done some off-set bonding 'cause it was just so awkward. It felt as though they were thrown into a scene together without having any back-story. A back story which they obviously knew as actors and should have put more effort into portraying on camera to make a touching scene. After so much time having passed between Dito and Antonio you'd at least expect them to have a silent understanding of the friendship between them and be able to portray that in the scene.
