QUESTION ABOUT ANTONIO

so when he went to prison for killing that guy in the movie with a baseball bat, how many years did he get in prison...?? Cos it seems a bit weird that he spent 20 years in jail for killing that guy, did he get released or something and then end up in jail again or what??

reply

...20 years seems pretty reasonable for HOMICIDE to me.
it was definitely intentional and it wasn't out of self-defense.

i am a burning building bringing everyone inside to the ground.

He was a poor kid that probably got a public defender to defend him in court. I doubt he got anything less than 20-25 years.

After the end credits there was a short clip from an interview with an (I assume) older prisoner whom they were talking with about Antonio. In this clip, the old man says "Poor Antonio, he's in for life" and then later when the interviewer says "He's a good guy, though" the old man replies "Yeah, I like him [Antonio], but good guys don't get out of here". I guess he was sentenced to life in prison and that the prison is where he eventually died, but maybe someone who've read the book could answer the question more accurately.

I believe that thats Dito's dad, not an old prisoner.

reply

yea that was dito's dad

reply

Ok, I suspected that, but he referred to the prison as "this place" so I kind of thought that it might've been a prisoner.

He went to prison for more than what this film gets into. And, then he actually escaped from Rikers Island, in real life, and then he got put back in.

Antonio was 16 at the time of the sentencing and was tried as an adult with a public defender as his attorney. And yes he later escaped from prison, only to be caught and put back in. I just finished the book, and it is unbelievable. Dito Montiel lived(not that he's dead) one of the most exciting and interesting lives ever. These stories range from inspiring to frightening.

I think that was Hollywood stuff they put in. He would have gotten no more than 15 years (maybe less) for manslaughter. The book is a lot different from movie, for example the real Dito traveled a lot, in movie they played the "stuck in the neighborhood) chiche'." In book he also hung out in manhattan a lot, which Astoria is right next to. 15 minuutes or less from train stop in film.

I'm glad someone asked about Antonio's fate. Looking at the movie, I thought he hit TSS in the back so I wondered why he was in jail still so many years later. Nowhere did they said it was murder so I thought maybe he was in jail for another reason.

I was also surprised that the dedication at the end did not include Mike. His fate was the only one that I felt saddened by. He did put the idea of leaving into Dito's head after all so I felt he saved him the most.

Dito Montiel stated that Antonio is a composite of three people. The book mentions a boy named Antonio Ruggeria who was sent to prison for manslaughter, escaped, and was later sent to prison again for things "that are even beyond putting in a movie that people might find redeemable." In the book, a copy of a newspaper article describing Antonio's escape from Rikers Island has the crime he committed blanked out.I searched and searched, but I couldn't find out what Ruggeria's other crimes were.
