not that i advocate the habit in any way, but i am sitting here watching cheryl hines' character smoke, and she just looks stupid.
if you don't smoke off camera, it makes very little sense to try and do it on camera. it's distracting and makes the actor look like an amateur.

An idiosyncratic observation indeed! As an ex-smoker myself with more than ten years good service behind the filter, I couldn't personally see anything wrong with Cheryl Hines's technique. Then again, perhaps in this particular vice, as in the words of the famous liqour advert, 'southerners have got their own rules.'
Actually, though it's true to discribe myself as an ex-smoker in the sense that I no longer habitually smoke, I don't stay away from the weed religiously. In fact, like many middle-aged Englishmen out for a night in the pub, I have on occasion been known to sneak outside and pop into the alley to suck on a crafty fag!
Hang on, perhaps I should rephrase that last statement...
