Ogie: From a Frog to a Prince!

I've just had a thought. If 'Waitress' is a fairytale, then the character of Ogie represents the Ugly Frog who is transformed into the Handsome Prince. The girl kisses the frog and breaks the spell that traps him in this loathsome form. In turn, the Prince takes the girl for his Princess and elevates her above all her peers.

This is a clear parallel of the manner in which the two saddest characters in the film - Dawn and Ogie - redeem eachother from a life of TV dinners-for-one and forge a truly happy relationship. Dawn is initially repelled by Ogie, but when she sees the good and kind man that lies beneath his nerdish exterior, she falls for him like a ton of bricks. There is not just one fairytale being told here - but two!

Damn, why didn't I think of it before?

owen, good analysis. it was good to see a redeeming, heart warming relationship in this movie amidst all the other unhappy relationships and affairs.

i liked ogie a lot. don't think i'm nuts, but i kept thinking as i watched that he could pass for pee wee herman's younger brother. much better looking than pee wee though.

He was so sweet and cute. The one romantic relationship that was real and lasted from the film.

Yes, I thought so too. Are you aware that as well as writing and directing 'Waitress', Adrienne Shelly also played the part of Dawn? She actually wrote the movie with the intention of playing the lead role of Jenna, but in the end she decided to play the supporting charcter of Dawn.
