As possessive and jealous as Earl was, we're supposed to believe he just lets Jenna walk away to happily make her pies (seems she stays in the same town) and he'll just never bother her again? C'mon. He was known for showing up places and dragging her home (bus stop, wedding). I don't buy that he's suddenly going to behave himself.

As often happens with a bully, when Jenna tells him in no uncertain terms to get lost, he does. His parting shot is not to pay the hospital bill.She had never definitively stood up to him before.
