more importantly Jenna got the check before she's divorced.
both the above being the case the (former) spouse is entitled to 1/2 the money.
It's a gift, and as such (from quick research) also not subject to community property. Might be state to state differences.

If she were smart and hd good advice, he wouldn't necessarily know about the check and could make it as if her friends put their money in her efforts as a donation. It's not like the idiot's going to be able to afford a great divorce lawyer that's savvy enough to do some research.
According to the life they had, she had no assets within the marriage whatsoever due to his 100% control of all things financial. Since there are also witnesses to how verbally abusive and threatening he was towards her. I figure he might have to pay up.
