moon pie -spoiler

I love this movie and have watched it 5 or 6 time. One thing bothers me about the end though. Why does the Keri Russell charcter give the doctor a moon pie after they breakup: WHY a moon pie?

reply

That's a very interesting question. I don't think that Shelly ever wrote anything without a reason, so the moon pie must have some significance.

OK, How about this? The moon has long been seen as a symbol for love and romance. This may have been the reasoning behind Jenna's presentation of a moon pie to the Doctor. It might be a reference to their romantic liaison, as in the old 'moon - june - spoon' song lyrics from the 1930's and 1940's.

Other than that, I'm stumped!

I think it was just the only thing she had with her to give him and she didn't want to not give him something, it was apart of their relationship.
I just loved he ate it right there and then in the hospital hallway lol

You may be right there. As Sigmund Freud once put it, "Sometimes a cigar really IS just a cigar!".

I asked the same question after my husband and I watched it….By giving him the store bought snack, it signifies she showed that she was done cooking and sharing her special pies, as well as that part of their lives. My bossy husband made me post this!

reply

You got it. A generic store bought "pie." Meaning she is done with him and a "good luck with that" gesture. It thought it was funny,

reply

I am shamed.

I totally missed the significance of a 'store-bought' as opposed to a 'home-made' pie. The symbolism is subtle, but clear. The 'home-made' pies represented their illicit relationship. The store-bought pie represented a return to their regular day-to-day existence.

Yes, I think that you have nailed it on the head there!

I interpreted the Moon Pie to be just a little more significant than has been previously noted.

I think it symbolized her declaration of independence: She now has everything she needs to make her fantasies real and no longer was she going to fulfill other people's fantasies.

I think the OP was onto something. It's a Moon Pie, that has some relevance, possibly acknowledging the love she has/had for the doc & that he has helped her move on.

There was the scene in the doc's office when she had a stunned look on her face, all the way to the bus stop & then a big smile, as if saying that she finally realizes what love is.
So the doc is an important part in helping her decide what she wants. Joe's $$ kinda helped too!

The fact that it is a store bought pie...well I don't think she could have made one of her signature pies while she was in the hospital, so she gave the only pie she had, probably the dessert from her hospital meal.

We're all in strung out shape, but stay frosty, and alert.

I was wondering about that too, I'm glad she chose not to break up his marriage, their affair was tacky anyway.
