Dastan's Brothers

how would you describe the relationship with the brothers? The older one (Tus?)and heir seem to trust Dastan and got along fine with him while the other one (Gasiv?) had some friction with him but in the end, he was his kid brother.

I wonder what they were like when Dad adopted him.

reply

All I can say is neither of the brothers(least the 2) looked alike... especially the eldest... he looked too Saxon to be Persian. LOL I kept thinking I was watching Beowulf.

Mr. Singer. What an appropriate name for a man who can't shut up.

Okay, ignoring their physical appearances, what did you think of the relationships b/w the brothers?

I actually really loved the relationship between the brothers. I admit, early on I was worried that at some point in the film we would get a typical "You're not really my brother" type line thrown at Dastan, but surprisingly it never came (unless I missed it). Tus and Garsiv seemed to truly accept Dastan as their brother and the bond between them seemed (to me) genuine. Yes, there was friction between Garsiv and Dastan which primarily seemed to stem from a 'who's the better fighter' type of mentality (since neither of them would be king unless Tus died, they had to find something to excel at, right?) that seemed like genuine brotherly competition to me.

What came across on screen was 3 brothers who did genuinely love each other.

(hope I made sense)

it did (but I'm a worse rambler).

Yeah I did noticed how the fact Dastan was not genetically related to them was never a point brought up by the brothers.

With Garsiv, he was quick to accuse Dastan of murder and go after him but then he was also quick to believe he was telling the truth, once Dastan appealed to logic and confirming his suspicions against their uncle. I'm guessing that Garsiv was always sore at the fact the his dad just up and adopted a kid and seem to go easier on him than his two biological sons, but as said before, Dastan was hi kid brother. Annoying, cunning and disobedient little brother.

I found the brothers' relationship intriguing as well. For the me, the acting and writing really enhanced the suspense about the dynamics of their bond. In the early scenes, I was trying to figure out if the friction between Garsiv and Dastan was political or just sibling rivalry. Garsiv really seemed to be a hothead. If he hadn't started impulsiving yelling that Dastan was a murderer, the situation might not have gotten out of hand (but then no movie). After all, the situation had all the signs of a set up. I like how he came to the realization that Dastan must be innocent.

As others mentioned, it doesn't seem like that there was any resentment on the part of Tus and Garsiv that Dastan was a commoner adopted by their father. Tus and Garsiv seem to have accepted him as their brother and been genuinely fond of him.

I'd like other opinions regarding the scene when Nizam saved his brother from the lion. To me, it looked he accidentally killed the lion.

reply

That's how I interpreted that scene, too. It seems like Nizam kind of reflexively lifted his spear as the lion leapt, and the lion fell on it.

I thought the relationship between Daston and his older brother felt pretty genuine and I thought the one between him and the middle child felt very contrived. I prefer movies where brothers actually act like oh I don't know BROTHERS. So I thought this was at least half well done...

When I first saw the movie and the last scenes I thought the same... What has changed - since it seemed that Garsiv and Dastan was always at odds with each other? But I've since changed my mind. Here's my opinion on the relationship between Dastan and Garsiv. I hiding it under spoilers just in case no one has seen the movie yet...

At first I thought Garsiv's hostility towards Dastan had to do with fighting/defending the empire since Garsiv is the head of the Persian army. But when the King visits Alamut and is given a banquet you see Garsiv looking at the King talking with Dastan (he might be hearing what the King is saying) and there seems to be jealousy in his eyes. So the relationship with Dastan at that point seems to be based on military prowness and sibling rivalry. And you mentioned the fact that he is the "middle child" in a royal family... not the heir (but a spare) so he feels that need to prove himself to the King as well as others. It changes when Dastan tells Garsiv at the village of Nizam not wanting him to be tried in court but killed outright. When the dagger turns back time to right after the battle at Alamut and the brothers see Nizam attack Dastan, the brothers come together as the King hoped they would (with Tus killing Nizam... and great acting by Richard Coyle showing the conflict that Tus had with killing his uncle.) IMHO, this showed a "new" and more confident Tus in making that decision and also with arranging the marriage between Dastan and Tamina - even though he could have added her to his list of wives.

There is a short interview with Richard Coyle on youtube explaining Tus' relationship with Dastan here:

I agree, that was a great scene where Tus' eyes move back and forth between Dastan and Nizam, and it seems that he might succumb again to Nizam's lies, but then Tus' heart wins out and he comes to the right conclusion.

reply

Although Tus was more considerate to Dastan, I got the impression from their scenes together that through the years Garsiv and Dastan may actually have been the closer brothers.

reply

Maybe its like Peanut Butter and Jelly- except Garsiv is all fire and prefers to see the world in black and white, while Dastan is bit more laid back and sees the shades of grey.

reply

I think that's a good analysis.

I also liked the brothers' relationship.

Are there people more intrigued by the relationship b/w the princes than the others?

reply

The relationship between all of them was pretty good, was thinking the last brother wouldn't trust Dastan but brotherly love won through at the end of the daySource:Prince of Persia sands of Time Reviewhttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2011/06/prince-of-persia-sands-of-time -review
