Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the Poster for Charlie Wilson's War

Funny Hollywood publicity:

The main poster for Charlie Wilson's War has Tom Hanks looking at Julia Roberts longingly -- with Phillip Seymour Hoffman standing between them, watching.

Thing of it is: in the movie, Amy Adams is standing where Hoffman is. They photoshopped Hoffman into the shot., and took Adams out.

It made sense. Hoffman was the recent winner of the Best Actor Oscar(Capote) and was entitled to his image on the poster alongside fellow Oscar winners Hanks(twice) and Roberts. So they just stuck him in there.

I think there was another poster where they simply put photos of Hanks, Roberts, and Hoffman side by side. It made more sense, but it wasn't as outrageous as the poster where Hoffman takes Amy's slot.

There's nothing "outrageous" about it at all. It's just a movie poster created by artists to show the key players of the movie.

Makes a lot of sense. Could have pulled any aspiring actress off the street to play Adam's role and the movie wouldn't have lost anything, but Hoffman made this movie. I rewatch this movie from time to time just to watch him play Gus Avrokotos.

I don't know if its Hoffman's greatest role, but it is his most entertaining one. His deep, mumbling voice and cynical manner are just too cool.

Best scenes:

His argument with the CIA guy over losing a post ("And, by the way, water goes UNDER a bridge and OVER a dam, you ponsie schoolboy.")

His back and forth with Tom Hanks at Hanks' office the first time they meet (Hanks said shooting this scene was "one of the happiest three days of my life."

Its also funny when the paunchy unkempt Hoffman makes a sexual pass at Julia Robert's rich politico. She turns him down but one realizes: Gust probably DOES bed some women on the basis of his cool, his spy background and his DC power.

Amazing to me: Hoffman in a small role in "The Big Lebowski" is good but nothing much -- he's a simpering lackey with a high voice. 9 years alter, he's got this deep voice, this tough manner...what a change.
