Should have let Russia clean house
The Soviet was dying anyway and that was not a imperial move by Russia, but one to stop the Muslim hoards from invading deeper into Russia.
Ethnic cleansing was needed.

Unlike the White House and their bs love of djihadists, the Kremlin has
absolutely no pity for them. They showed it in Central Asia, in Chechnya
and in the tragic events of that theater siege and Beslan. When everything
must go, THEY GO including innocent lives.
Between communism or Islamism, I'd take the first one.

Let's hear it for 20/20 hindsight. Back in the 1980s, the Soviet Empire seemed unstoppable, and anyone who suggested that it was weaker than it appeared (Daniel Pipes, for one) was ridiculed.
Moreover, in many respects the Soviet Empire committed murder and genocide on a scale that made the Nazis seem like Boy Scouts.
The Muslim jhihadists, by contrast, while certainly not pro-Western, did appear to be useful in this circumstance.
Only Stalin really did all of that and everybody hated him. He was never supposed to get power. Lenin wanted Trotsky.
shareIf the Soviets controlled the region, they would not have died. That area would have been their cash cow to keep the USSR funded. Don't you see why they wanted it in the first place? It's not to "spread communism." It's the same reason they pushed into the Ukraine and want to push further into the arctic circle. They want the oil to use, and sell to countries who are in desperate need for it. Those places pay much more for a barrel than the United States does, which gets things cheap, because they "liberated" Iraq and let Saudi Arabia oppress the entire region.
It's still better than muslim jihadists who are in control now.
