Defeating the Soviet Empire? Yes, it was a good idea at the time.

Was arming Stalin's Soviet Union to defeat Hitler a good idea? (Look it up, so much Soviet equipment was American made)

In hindsight lots things are now seen as a bad idea

It was a top 10 US worst foreign policy idea in history. But the US government only had tunnel vision for Soviet Union. It would inevitably create global terror like the world has never seen.

Arming them defeated the Soviets. The mistake was not helping the Afghans rebuild their country. In walks the Talaban and we know how that went.
