Femine qualities are commonly thought to include empathy, sympathy, creativity, compassion, to name a few, and you probably notice these arent limited to just women. There are compassionate men, creative men, men of compassion. I doubt they are all, as you suggest, gay.
Given that 7 is a kick-ass hero (I noticed the irony in her slaying the first monster, that it mimics an action in Advent Children-story of FF7) instead of a maternal, mother-hen character shows the writer was aware that male qualities can make the crossover to females, and did not want to limit her portrayal to ONLY female qualities.

i don't think it had anything to do with sexuality,
1- these are voices, and as we saw in the beginning for 9, a mechanical box gave him the voice
2- they are rag dolls and a sexual, so no body parts to procreate of difference of any kind i.e. "breasts"
3- 3 and 4 did n't have voices and could have easily been "female" but one doesn't know since again they have no sexuality.
does that make sense?
