What's the deal in the scene with the Queen?

Weird scene where Adams goes before the Queen who is not there. Can someone explain this scene to me, historically accurate? Protocol/meaning of it?

The Queen? What Queen? Do you mean the scene when Adams is presenting himself to the Crown as the American Ambassador and the seat is empty? There was no Queen in power in Britain at that time, but rather a King. It was King George III. Really?! Is your knowledge of anything beyond "Dancing With the Stars" that limited?
