if you haven't already seen this handsome hulk in the movie, "athadu", I recommend that you do so sometime in your lifetime....no it is not a movie like "forrest gump" or "nayakan" but it is a very entertaining movie. The action sequences closely resemble the ones in Matrix and the songs of this movie are just enticing!!!! So if you even get the chance to watch this movie with a brilliant performance by this "prince", take advantage of it! The movie is worth the watch and is a breath of fresh air from the usual plotless bulk of bollywood movies!
P.S. "athadu" is in telegu but subtitles are provided
Telegu is one of India's many languages....telegu is typically spoken in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh or spoken by people who have a andhra pradeshian background but are in different states due to migration.
There is only one Kate! Mona my friend! how many languages are there in India? and are they understandable across the country? What I mean is, Are they all based on one old language?
There are LOTS of languages and countless dialects spoken across India. There is no universal language understandable throughout the country (probably English comes close), but Hindi is the national language as it is spoken by the majority of the population (mostly in the North of India). Typically each state in India has its primary language, as the language was one of the primary considerations in the formation of states after the independence of India from the British.
As for the origin of the languages, there are two main 'parentages' - one set of languages deriving from Sanskrit (Hindi, Punjabi for example) under the Indo-Aryan category and the other is Dravidian category (Tamil, Telugu etc).
Btw, it's TelUgu and not TelEgu :)
disc: majority of the information above from wikipedia!
Facinating Chandisnot. Thankyou. I had not even heard of the "Dravidian category (Tamil, Telugu etc)".
I love languages! Although I understand the language of costumes more easily. Are there different costumes typical in every different state? or did there used to be? How on earth could so many languages exist in one country? I mean I know it's a big place but, wow.
Hmmmm, and this coming from an american who lives on a continent once inhabited by thousands of different nations with thier own languages? how could I forget when some of my own ancestors were indiginous people (strangley enough they were once known as Indians themselves as completly inaccurate as that was and still is) My comment was thoughtless.
Though Sanskrit seems more popular in the Western world due to its Indo-European origins, Dravidian languages are equally important in the discussion of Indian languages. Some claim Tamil predates even Sanskrit.
As for the costumes, there are significant differences in the traditional dresses of each region in the country. A trained eye can easily and accurately guess a person's state. The huge contrast as you travel from Kashmir in the North to Kanyakumari in the South will surely be a shock to a foreigner. But I guess, that's what makes this country such an interesting place to live in.
Btw, how preposterous on the part of Columbus to salvage some pride from a failed exploration by naming the indigenous people 'Indians'! :)
I couldn't agree more concerning Columbus. Still, for all his ignorance and arrogance, he still has admirable and heroic qualities; even if those can't reasonably inlcude the discovery of a yet unknown country.
I would love to visit India, to take classes to learn abotu India as well. Is there a movie that you know of which might show alot of the cultural variety of India to give me a taste of it ? (I obviously don't mind subtitles in the least) I'd be most grateful if you could think of any. There is a Global Mall only 40 minutes away which largely caters to Indians perhaps I could find the movie there.
Wish I could suggest ONE movie to show you all about India. But I can't think of any right now.
As some great soul (would have) said, don't judge a country by its movies!! Almost all the movies are way too detatched from actual reality. Don't think the movies are any substitution to actually visiting India :)
quite true quite true... but while I'm still a lower-middle class income, stay-at-home-mom books by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, movies and the occasional visit to The Global Mall (where white people aren't exactly welcomed with open arms)are about as close as I'm going to get to a visit to India for a while. Alas.
Still you can learn a lot of subtle things form movies about the way a culture wishes to present itself.
My friend who knows telegu made me see this movie forcefully :) (which I'm glad he did cuz that actress is hot). If I remember it right he told me athadu means "That guy".
Movie in itself didn't impress me much probably cuz I predicted the entire story just after that politician got killed in the beginning. Why was story so obvious to me? .... I'm confused. Is this movie copied from somewhere or based on some book which I might have gone through? Do any of u guys know that?
