Did I mĂsunderstand anything when Liam seemingly travelled for free in those taxi's? When googled the shanghai taxi fares, it turned out that they are apparently not free at all. So, what really happened in this movie?
But he asked if they shouldn't tip the taxi driver in the fist taxi and his cousin just said "naah". But maybe his cousin had arranged it all in advance?
of course you have to pay for taxi.. are you guys serious? he was told to not tip the concierge who opened the door for him after he got out of the taxi and in his hotel room.
Aaah, tip in that sense. Got a bit confused by that because I'm from europe and we don't tip here either(and I forgot what the word 'tip' actually meant). But honestly, as Mr. pink says in Reservoir dogs, tipping is a kinda stupid tradition in the US. They should just charge extra, if they can't earn enough for whatever, without giving extra service.
Tip (aka t.i.p.)is actually an acronym for "to insure promptness."
As for it's origins, it varies. For example, in the 17th Century, French nobles were often fond of tossing out coins to peasants when they would pass the streets to ensure safe and fast travel down the streets. That's the most commonly-believed origin.
Shanghai taxi fare is 11 yuan startup right now. Which is about 1.5 US dollars. So for him to ride from place to place like that will cost him well over 100 Yuan.
Also, what really bothered me was that the very beginning, Liam comes out of the Pudong International Airport, which is on the east side of the river in Shanghai. But for some reason he is magically on the west side driving through places near People's Square and then he is driven back to the east side again and goes to the JinMao...
hey, dude, that's just movie. You don't really need to follow the real routine. Movie is movie, haha. Don't worry about the money, movie doesn't show every details.
I noticed this too, but what can you expect from such a crap movie.
Also there's no taxi driver in shanghai that won't understand "jin mao", they know right away. maybe if it was somewhere more complicated like a sidestreet somewhere, but everyone knows jin mao.
Haha, I did NOT get the vibe that the taxi driver didn't know but instead was ripping off a clueless rich American. I'm not sure how Shanghai is but cab drivers in Manila rip off Americans all the time.
Never thought about it that way before. Maybe Liam was getting long-hauled. However, all the places the cabbie takes Liam are places that can be easily confused with Jin Mao, especially since Liam's Mandarin is poor. For example, one of the places he is taken to is Jiang Temple. Temple in Mandarin is pronounced like "meow" so I could see how that could be confused with Jin Mao.
