Constructive Criticisms *Spoilers*

Loved the movie overall but there are some problems.

- David Ren stated that the "powerful kiss" scene was cut out because the American audience couldn't accept it and I wasn't surprised at all. Ken is too old and unattractive for the lead role, I'm sure a lot of people would cringe at the idea of Hayden and Ken being intimate. I'm not being racist either because I am an Asian male myself, but c'mon Ken is 37 and starting to go bald, Hayden is 18 and the epitome of "goddess" to many people. Liam is supposed to be 29? He looks older than that on screen. When I watched the deleted kiss scene, I felt uneasy myself.

- The age difference was also a huge social faux pas which made no sense and added to the "wrongness". I can tell that Shanghai Kiss took many inspirations from LIT such as the scene when Liam first arrived in Shanghai and was in a taxi. The difference is that LIT successfully tackled the age difference by being subtle and not having the female character constantly calling the male "baby baby baby" or "boyfriend". If Liam was played by a younger more handsome actor and if he wasn't such a jackass to Addy, then I'm sure the audience would've cheered for them to kiss instead of cringing. I know that this film is semi autobiographical, so maybe the director did date a 16yr old highschool girl but the director himself wasn't 37, he's only 23-24 right now AFAIK.

I have to respectfully disagree with the OP. I'm female and I find Ken extremely attractive. I personally would not cringe if Addy's character was 18 and they had an intimate scene. When I saw the "powerful kiss", I do admit, I was disappointed because I did expect (and wanted to see) how should I say a "more" powerful kiss. However, I did love the movie and I thought Ken was perfect in every way.

To OP

If the age difference made you uncomfortable, than yeah, that was the point. I think the audience was supposed to feel uncomfortable. Ken's character himself was uncomfortable and thats why he kept things platonic. Hayden was the only one who didn't seem to have a problem with it. And the age difference also served as a barrier to them being together, otherwise if age was not a factor they would have been together from the beginning and we wouldn't even have a movie.

You say that Liam was a jackass. Well he wasn't any more of a jackass than owen wilson, vince vaughan, Jack Nicholson or matthew mcconaughey in their romantic movies. Sometimes being a bit of a jackass is attractive to women. Deal with it.

And whats with the Ken bashing? Balding? Looks old for his age? Unnattractive? Are you serious? And I suppose you're an asian brad pitt...

Ken is a really good looking guy, just ask the girls around you for their opinion. He's not balding at all and he can pass for a guy in his mid twenties. He's got those boyish looks. Like an asian Michael J Fox or Ralph Macchio. And its not like Hayden is perfect in the looks department either. She's rather short, stubby, has a big forehead and a bit of an overbite. Its easy to point out flaws in everybody, even "godesses". And looks aren't everything. Humphrey Bogart was kinda ugly and small but he had charisma and he got all the girls in his movies. I think Ken brings a similar screen presence.

Having said all that, I've seen the kiss scene, and I was glad it was left out of the movie. The movie was just fine the way it was. Perhaps having them kiss at the end at the airport would have been better but I think the director wanted to keep things ambigous on whether they actually end up together at the end.

lawlz right bout that OP.

I thought the film handled the age issue perfectly. I loved how Liam was very strict about not getting intimate with Adie when she was still underaged. And how he struggled with it. They connected emotionally and mentally so their friendship really flourished.

In the end, the movie convinced me that they were really in love. It wasn't about an adult perv trying to get into the pants of some high school kid. These two truly have a relationship. And she was 18 by the end of the movie so I don't see why people still have to rag on the age thing. She's already legal. An adult. She can love who she wants to love.

Like the movie said, the heart wants what it wants. Who are we to judge?

As you said it was deleted, so what would be the problem?

C'mon that guy looked (and behaved)like 50 something, and you're comparing him to Liam ????

maybe the director did date a 16yr old highschool girl but the director himself wasn't 37, he's only 23-24 right now AFAIK

or may be he was dating an older woman when he was underaged. either way love has no boundary, as long as you obey the law. less prejudice would make the world better.
