I feel so sorry for the poor lady that sold her house to make this movie possible. She's probably regretting that decision now. God awful movie.

I completely disagree. This is an excellent movie, with great plot lines and a fantastic cast of actors. It is revolutionary for Asians because for the first time an Asian male is the leading man in a main stream movie for a world-wide audience. The lady who helped to produce it should be very proud and happy about its tremendously positive impact on the image of Asian males in western movie culture and the ability for Asian leads to capture the hearts of western as well as eastern audiences. It long-lasting legacy will be her ultimate reward.

Well said with points xya. That lady must be happier than those folks in China town when they were making John Lone's Year of the Dragon...

@redhotsox
I agree with you.
It is an awful movie.
And as for others, chinese film industry is one of the most respected in the world. You guys dont have to make a movie like this to show your importance.
I have seen movies like chungking express, the old barber, se jie, 2046, in the mood for love and a few more, and really, you guys(china) have some great actors and directors.
This movie was pathetic not only in terms of direction and screenplay but also by individual performances.

The only thing is, you're addressing the wrong group when you say "you guys." This is not a "Chinese" film, so why compare it to Chinese films you admire? If anything, I suppose it's a "Chinese-American film," for it explores its story with an Asian-American lead. As a caucasian male, even I'm noticing that Asian-American men rarely get lead roles, so I think this film is valuable in and of itself for increasing their exposure, and therefore their acceptability, in mainstream American cinema.

"This is not a "Chinese" film"
I agree..i made a mistake on this one.
I think what i really disliked was the cliched "american-bashing" in the movie.
All through out you find characters unnecessarily critizing the americans - for eg.liams dad in the beginning, or kelly hu or her mafia boyfriend..
I feel it leaves a bad taste to the movie because in some way or the other it shows the writers inferiority complex.
As for asian getting the lead role..this movie is directed and written by an asian-american..so i m not sure if its really a "breakthrough".

Whats more important is acceptance of this movie by the non-asian crowd..by acceptance of mixed race couples in the society(not just african americans and caucasians)
I am from India..and yet as an Asian, I did not connect with the movie at all.
This movie might have had a promising concept, but it failed completely in execution.
By the "you guys" comment i also implied that director david ren has a lot to learn from his chinese counterparts.
