Dario Argento Movies

I don't know who's idea it was to push the Dario Argento movies in this film. Whether the writer Diablo Cody or the director Jason Reitman, maybe even something Jason Bateman came up with. I'd heard of Argento but didn't think I'd ever seen any of his films. In the last two weeks I've watched 5 of his movies and (sorry if your a fan) they suck big time. They remind me of the cheap horror films they were making in England before Hammer Film Studio started up. I watched Deep Red, Susperia, Tenebre, Phenomena and Mother of Tears. Mother of Tears had better production values than the others but all the stories stink. I'll watch one of his first 3 films if I can find one of them. if it's as bad as the others I've watched I give up.

I'm 90% sure Cody made the reference. Is Mark right that Herschell Gordon Lewis is more a "master of horror" than Argento? I don't much fancy extreme gore so I don't watch their movies.

I just watched Two Thousand Maniacs. It was goofy. But at least it had some funny moments. Unfortunately that's the only Lewis movie available to me right now. I'm not a fan of gore either, unless it has true purpose to the storyline.
My quote below is from The Little Prince. That's more my speed.

No, Herschell Gordon Lewis is cheap, all he would think of was how many different ways can you torture a woman. Suspiria is a classic and has inspired so many good films.

I remember back when Silent Hill 2 was first released, there was a big interview with the director. They asked him what the scariest movie he'd ever seen was, and he said Suspiria. I ran out and bought it. Words cannot express how disappointed I was after I finished watching it. I have to assume he answered the question ironically, maybe he was in a bad mood that day.

Suspiria is not bad at all, actually, and it has an amazing soundtrack by Goblin. I'm more surprised they tried to push Herschell Gordon Lewis, I'd say Argento's way better.
I wouldn't call either of them 'the master of horror', though.

Now I miss the Masters of Horror board!

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

Nope Dario Argento is actually a pretty talented filmmaker, the lesbians' assassination scene in Tenebre is one of the greatest sequences I've ever seen, great camera moves. As for Herschell he only does gore-filled movies for the sake of gore, nothing really great about him at all.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like... My opinion, man

Remember that Mark's video was titled "Master of Gore." They ere debating who did the better gore, i.e. special effects, rather than a well done horror.

Good point.

I just never understood the referrences! i know argento and HG lewis but why did the writer/director put those in?? lol

Just because the movies aren't for you doesn't mean they suck. That kind of thinking just makes you look ignorant.
