So Damien's biological mother is the jackal? Who is the father? Satan? Or did some guy diddle the jackal? Obviously the father is Satan, Damien being the son of Satan, meaning the jackal was just busy frolicking around being a jackal one day, when all of a sudden, BAM, Satan spermatozoa right in her womb?

And how did this poor pregnant-with-a-human jackal end up in the Roman hospital? How did nobody notice this jackal gave birth to a human? Who birthed it? The two priests?

After researching, I get now that Pete Postlethwaite and Burn Victim were originally...Satanic priests...who wanted to ease the rise of the anti-Christ, and then they repented. Fine. But how did they know where to find the pregnant jackal?

Believe me, I'm not at all the kind of person who needs things explained, or total closure, Michael Haneke is one of my favourite directors, but...there's a difference between letting you draw your own conclusions, and the inexplicable.

I think part of it is left to the imagination. I would suggest reading th novel because it gives a little more info on the background of one of the priests and the birth of Damien is described a little more. However regarding how they found the jackal is not really explained. This is how I always imagined it happening. Somehow through some kind of satanic divine intervention they knew what night that Satan would(not sure if it was physically or spiritually) would impregnate the jackal. Its not that they went to the pregnant jackal I think they just selected a jackal(didn't have to be any one in particular) and the cult met at a secret place and the ceremony took place. Maybe they could visually see what was going on. If it was done physically and not spiritually(like the conception of Christ) I wonder what form the devil took. Did he arrive at the secret place in the form of the man and perform beastiality with the jackal? Or did he appear in his natural form and have sex with the animal? It can be assumed that the jackal was taken care of somewhere for the duration of the pregnancy. From what I recall from the book the birth happened in the hospital basement and was hidden from the rest of the staff. Because the baby would in no way be birthed the natural way a c section was done and the baby was torn from the belly. This of course killed the jackal and they secretly removed the body from the hospital to be buried in Cervet cemetary where hopefully the truth would never be known. Katherine's real child was secretly carried to the basement and had its skull crushed. It was taken away and buried in Cervet cemetary too. This is how I liked to think it happened.

I can accept pretty much all of that except:

1) What were the priests using for brains when they thought of the idea "let's hide the bodies in their respective graves, the first place anybody would look for answers, and find proof of our scheme."?

2) I always thought (as an atheist), that Christ's conception was meant to be spiritual, not physical, like it was the Holy Ghost that miracled Mary into pregnancy or something like that. Let's hope it was the same for the poor jackal, haha.

3) I don't resent it in this particular case because it's specific points, but usually it doesn't do a film credit when you have to read a book (or in the case of the Star Wars prequels; a comic or an anime), to have a competent understanding of the plot. That being said, I probably will read the book one day.

1) Them being priest logic is beyond them.
2) Christ conception is supposed to be spiritual as his mother was a virgin, thus its not possible she has had sex and the baby miraculously happened to be christ. well, according to bible anyway.

Christ's conception was spiritual, not physical. As far as I know, the Mormons are the only religious group who believe that God the Father had sex with Mary. Guess they "forgot" about her being a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus.

A couple of graves with modern dates in an ancient cemetary would be rather obvious, eh? I'm thinking that the prepetrators felt the need to be blatantly outrageous and blaphemous. That's about the only way that one can explain this sort of thing.

Damien's father was Satan and his mother was a jackal called Maria Avedici Santoya.

Yes, Damien's mother is a jackal. Satan is his father. Satan raped a jackal, and Damien was created.
They smuggled the jackal into the hospital. This is not a busy American hospital, nor is it a normal set of circumstances. Doubtless several people were involved (in the book they mention some) and they helped cover it up, birth the baby & make sure no one else was around.
Do you mean how did they know where to find the jackal 'in labor' or the dead buried jackal? If you mean the former, its because they were directly involved in the plot & helped it progress. If its the latter you're asking, its because they helped bury it. Thorn's child too. One of the priests actually killed Thorn's baby (the book mentions this).
