why would they kill Robert's son?? I still don't understand why they would murder him with a blow to the skull

So that Damian could be substituted in place for him. Julia Stiles didn't actually miscarry the child, the child was intentionally murdered so that Damian could replace him. The priests just lied to Thorne about the true fate of the child so as to encourage their chances of making the switch, as Julia Stiles character id desperate for a child and the priest leads the male protagonist ti believe she may not be able to carry again. It's pretty simple bud.

Why did they even tell Robert the baby died in the first place? They killed his child any way, he wasn't there when the baby was born and Katherine hadn't seen the baby, so why not just tell Robert that Damien was the child Katherine gave birth to? Wouldn't that be easier? They wouldn't have to convince him to take this child and lie to his wife; he'd just think the baby was his (what if he'd told the priests no?).

What would have happened if Thorn just decided not to take the other baby as his own? You would think the devil clan would be a little smarter.

I've wondered that also... guess it's about driving the plot so that he knows the truth and can start to check into who Damien might actually be...
