Why didn't the parents assume Damien has autism?

Doesn't respond when his parents talk, not very verble for a 5-year old but makes noises, zones out...I would at least consider the possibility that the kid has autism not jump to the conclusion that he's evil like Katherine does.

Katherine doesn't think autism, because she has those motherly instincts, you know?

They probably did assume that, but they didn't explore scenes of her getting her son tested. I guess they felt it was unimportant, the writers that is, to show those background scenes.
