A line that makes no sense

"Maybe we don't need a nanny. You're not working."
"I'm trying to raise our child! That's work."

What she said makes no sense. He meant that there was no reason why she couldn't raise the kid, as she didn't have work outside the house. And he was completely right. And she took it all personally, with the whole "taking care of a kid is work" thing. Makes no sense.

Why the hell did they need a nanny anyway? They had maids doing all the housework. Are you telling me she couldn't take care of ONE kid while sitting at home all day?

reply

it doesn't really make sense does it? Although I suppose she meant that Damien was a handful, which he was to her!

Might have worked in the original. But not here.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Raising a child is work. Perhaps she felt that he thought it was effortless and she reacted in protest.

In that way it makes sense to me.

I know so many women who don't work but hire nannies - too busy going shopping I guess!

I think that's what she meant. I actually like that line. Even though,it doesn't make sense at first, Kate is getting more and more frustrated and took it as an insult.

Under my system of having some fun with this godawful movie, you would say back to her, "You mean you're trying to raise our evil child."

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

"You're not working"

"I'm trying to raise our EVIL child, and it's a two-person job, okay?!"

Two reasons:
1. Raising a kid IS work. Its not the same a working a regular job, no.
But its tough, its 24/7.
Plus I agree with the person who stated that Damien was a handful, for sure. So, that makes it more 'trying' for Katherine.

As for why they needed a nanny, its what people in high-powered political positions often do.
The novel explains it a little more: Kathy is often required to attend political teas & lunches. She also spends a lot of time volunteering at charities.
So, she needs someone to look after Damien.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?

Yeah that doesn't make sense at all, what she said.

-We don't need a nanny because you're not working and you stay home with Damien anyways.
-I DO work in that I stay home with Damien! Therefore we need a nanny!

If they had a nanny, she would undoubtedly not be working anymore in anyone's regard. Maybe she should have put more emphasis on "TRYING to raise.." so it alludes to the fact she can't do it alone?

reply

Yes, you and the OP are right. I don't see how the rest of these people think they're putting forth a valid defense for her stupid response.
