Why did the critics love this film?

I'm gonna guess because it's a film that's self-aware that it's bad and is chock full of satire while not being a straight up parody? That's the only thing I can guess, but there are a lot of other self aware films out there that still get panned. Plus, this is still a very trashy film which tends to turn off critics looking for Oscar winners with everything they review.

I don't get it either. It's not that good, even for what it is.

I don't win a lot.

That's what I mean. It's just nothing special. I mean, look at Leprechaun. Self aware film and the critics hated it. I was hoping I wasn't the only one that didn't get it, lol. And I LOVE horror films.

The RottenTomatoes score is higher than I expected (74%). This was back in the days when they absolutely dragged horror movies. For example Friday the 13th from the year before got 25%, another horror remake that upped the sleaze.

I can only guess they appreciated the comedic slant and took it for what it was, a silly sleazy flick. I never saw it in theatres but perhaps the 3D experience helped too?

It did well because it was one of a kind, that's why
