The white kid...

I kept expecting that they were going to show something that the white kid could relate to them. Like that maybe he had lost friends to gang violence or that he lived in the projects also.

I know this is based on a true story but I just kept expecting it.

same here. like with the Line Game, it just seemed like he was kinda left out. Except for the drugs.

He relates to the other kids because he's kept in a box just like them. Because he's white, he's supposed to be the smart one, but he isn't. He, just like everyone else in the class, becomes true to himself when he asks to go to Ms. G's class.

I think this thread shows pretty much where all the problems are coming from.. Missunderstanding, not paying attention and then attacking each other instead of pointing out the reference to the Freedom Rides vs. the scripts / movies name. And in the end - no one thought it appropriate to apologise.. Well, that's how we tick. Nice.

I saw the movie again recently and caught something I hadn't before. When the class returns for sophomore year, the white kid and a black kid greet each other, and he tries to do some hand gesture with the black kid. The black kid says, "still white, i see" but it's said in a good-natured way. It shows their growing comfort with, and acceptance of, each other.
