Is the bombing intro at the beginning real?

I'd be amazed if it's not. I think it is real but it's pretty unusual to have directors using footage of real bombings, riots, disasters etc, thats why there's some doubt in my mind.
If real does anyone have any info about when/where shot and any background?

The DVD has the directors comments, the director said it was real footage

I was wondering this as well, so thank you for that.

Actually, it's not than unusual to use stock footage in films. My favorite film "Land of the Blind" also uses such stock footage.

A Bright Shining Lie used very similar footage as well. Great stuff.

It's well known color 16mm gun camera footage of a napalm run by the ARVN planes. Actually I've never seen it presented so ... beautifully....

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

Rescue Dawn has been on Cinemax a lot lately and that opening footage is simply captivating. Horrible of course to be the object of that bombing run but there are two aspects that make it watchable over and over; 1) It's real 2) The soundtrack.

Beautiful yet shocking footage. I think I watched the whole scene with my jaw on the floor. It was an amazing scene. It reminded me of the opening scene of "saving private Ryan". I know it doesn't compare, but, so devastating and surreal.
