It has taken me a while to have even heard about this film and had lowish expectations as I have seen Spall in way too many dreary roles.

Wow, what a performance. I've seen some threads on oscar nominations etc and thoughts on why he missed out. However, as a film fan, I was hugely entertained so he gets an oscar from me, for what's its worth.

Challenging story line which both he and the director did superbly well to keep the pace (slow but engaging) as well as the emotional development of the character (pride in his work, regardless the nature of the work).

This really was for me one of kind film...but open to suggestions.....

I totally agree. It's criminal that this film never got a cinema release, then sat around for ages waiting for a distributor, then get a VERY low-key release on DVD.
The nett result being that hardly anyone has seen what to my eyes is Spall's greatest performance.
