LOL @ PPL EXPECTING A NORMAL FILM FROM BEN WHEATLEY!

This was exactly what I expected from him, a deeply satirical and dark look into a microcosm of class struggles inside a high rise apartment building during the 70s. I defy anyone to tell me whether they liked the film or not that it did not achieve what it set out to do, mainly put to film the J.G. Ballard novel, and do it successfully. In my opinion, this film's closest kissing cousin would have to be Snowpiercer, except I truly believe High Rise is TEN TIMES THE FILM SNOWPIERCER WAS....

I can't stand calling anything an "instant cult classic". It's not up to a new viewer to decide that, it's up to time and passion and fervor and a following, but if anyone deserves truly cult auteur status it would have to be the maestro Ben Wheatley who has served us up another cinematographic winner in my opinion!

Bon Appetite!

I don't really like it. it feels like it is just a copy of other older dystopian films. made within our generation. it just seems like a more polished version of something i had already seen from the 60s,70s,80s and 90s. nothing new is brought to the table only cleaned up, in color, with a new filter. more of the same. i understand that it is meant to be a utopian film that shows us this class structure of reality (hate to break it to you kid but its been happening a long time before you have been born, within other films before you have been born). I have seen far to many films of this genre to believe this could be a cult classic. maybe for the masses but for others who were looking for a new perspective or take on something otherwise very much the same are very much left disappointed.

Name some. I'm curious.

Yeah I'm with him ^ please name some. I would love to check out some such films as I personally, a huge fan of dystopia and wonderfully fascinated with a lot of the themes in High-Rise, have not ever seen a film much like it. It reminded me very slightly of A Clockwork Orange, which I think is really cool.

I have actually just read the novel in a week, and then watched the film again for the third time (first time since having read the novel), and I feel very strongly that a huge reason for the low rating on IMDb is that so so many people who have watched this film do not actually really understand what they are watching; they just don't get it. I didn't really understand it half as much before as I do now, having read the novel. It helps.

I still loved it before, but more for it's crazy, whackiness, it's vibrance, bursting with excitement and such craziness. I just loved how nutty it was, the exaggerated personalities, the art direction and costumes, the awesome use of music and how tremendously well filmed it was. Having now read the novel though, I feel like I really understand this film on a deeper level.

Loved it and Snowpiercer cannot compete for comparison. I've rented the dvd and am rewatching it because there is so much detail that compliments the story. Loved the soundtrack as well as the visuals and acting.
