When I woke up this morning and switched on the TV, this was playing on one of the Sky Movies channels and I watched about half an hour of it, from the point where Cuba Gooding Jr's father, the Colonel, comes in, to near the end. I don't think it was a horrible film at all, I wouldn't describe it as really good, but there are much worse films around than this, like Are We There Yet, Date/Epic/Disaster Movie and other rubbish. For a kid's film, this was perfectly harmless and competently made and not full of idiotic slapstick humour involving people getting covered in goo or mud or set pieces where things get destroyed. If you see this as a Cuba Gooding Jr film, yes he should be doing something a lot better and he doesn't try very hard here, but Richard Gant, who plays the Colonel, was rather good, I thought he saved the movie. Just shows character actors can be a lot more dependable than some of these stars.
I don't know why I felt this urge to defend some cheap and cheesy kiddie film, but I don't think it deserves a 2 out of 10 IMDB score and it seems that everyone has really dumped on it! It's not The Goonies or Mary Poppins but it's not awful.
