Is this the film that started the trend in live action fairy tale films?

It seems like movie makers have gone nuts making live action fairy tale films and TV shows. All the Snow White films, Grimm, Once Upon a Time, and now even a new Hansel and Gretel film.

Is this what started it all off?

There's been live action fairy tale films for awhile and this one wasn't a huge success. Plus for something somewhat recent Brothers Grimm was about a year and a haf before and had more success so I would say that one had more influence.

Julie Andrew's Cinderella in the 1950s (and the two re-makes in the 1990s)
Drew Barrymore's Ever After
There is even is/was a silent movie of "Cinderella" staring Mary Pickford in the 1900s.

There have always been a few fairy tale movies. There was a bit of a revival in the 80s with stuff like Labyrinth, Willow and The Dark Crystal but it stayed mostly underground. Lord of the Rings put fantasy into blockbuster status, so that was a big help too. Enchanted meanwhile probably convinced Disney to go back to making animated movies again.

I think it started with Burton's Alice.
