Why did the 'Free State' become a Catholic state?

Didn't Irish realize in making Ireland an officially Catholic state, they were simply trading London rule for Rome rule? That the "free state" would force Protestants to live as second-class citizens the way Catholics once were? That this would prevent the North from wanting to join the South?

The majority of Ireland is Catholic and they wanted to set up their country that put their culture first?

Bear in mind that in the present day, the Republic of Ireland isn't as religious as it used to be.

Someone- I think an Irishman- said that Ireland actually became more oppressive after it's independence than ever it was beforehand. Ironic really.

"Oh dear. How sad. Never mind!"

The Free State Army were as bad as the English, if not worse, given the attacks on their own people. Fully agree with Hotrodder there.

But that was always their objective, that's why the Unionists so vehemently objected to HR in the first place, they knew what would happen.
