I'm talking about the ending of season 5. Do you love it & wish they stopped it right there or are you glad they kept going?
I'm 60-40, in favor of ending it. Don't get get me wrong, the later seasons have produced some phenomenal episodes. Some of my all time favorite episodes
But that OG ending was just hand down one of the best series finales ever in my opinion. I've still not finished it, I'm 2 seasons behind & in the middle of a rewatch but I've honestly NOT heard positive things about the actual ending to the show.
Again, part of me is definitely glad they continued it but I also wish they ended as the creator of the show intended.
I feel like the show should have ended at season 5, which some modifications to the original ending so it ended on a positive note.
I mean after Eric Kripke (who lets be honest was the heart and soul of Supernatural) left the show kind of when down hill.
Dean and Sam characters weren't as deep or complex as before and it felt like the show as stuck on how to proceed in developing certain characters like Castiel ( I truly believe the only reason they kept this character on was because he was so popular with the fans, even though he didn't really need to be part of the story anymore).
In conclusion the show should have ended at season 5, sure it would have been short but it would have been perfection. Just like Breaking Bad ending it short on a high note.
The original ending is the proper ending to the series. And in my own personal canon, in my head, it is; seasons 06-15 are therefore apocryphal. The one quibble I have with the original ending is that Kripke planned on leaving Sam and Adam in hell. It should not have been that way. The way the show's ending works, God has grown partly disinterested in the world and no longer seems certain it's worth saving. The Winchester's heroism, and Sam's sacrifice seems to renew His faith in mankind and given them a second chance. Sam's sacrifice is both selfless and truly heroic. Adam was plucked out of heaven to serve as Michael's vessel, so we know he was a good enough person not to deserve hell. There is simply is no way these characters should end up in hell as their final reward. The original ending should have made it clear that, no longer needing to serve as vessels for Lucifer and Michael, God freed them, Adam to return to heaven, and Sam to go there. And that would still leave the intended ironic ending that Sam, the rebellious brother who tried to escape the Winchester legacy of hunting, has to sacrifice himself to defeat the ultimate monster, and Dean, the obedient brother who dutifully obeyed their father is the one who unexpectedly ends up free to live his life and have a family in the way Sam had always wanted to do.
And that ending works based on what we see on screen at the end of the season 5 finale. We see Sam at the end, no longer in hell, looking in on his brother as Dean reunites with Lisa. The flickering street lamp strongly suggests Sam is a spirit in this scene as well, and one can presume he could then let go and proceed on to heaven. That, to me, is the appropriate place to lower the curtain on the brothers Winchester.
Your comment perfectly summarizes how I felt about the Season 5 finale as well. It really should have ended there. As a series it may not have grown with the sort of fandom it accrued from fangirls the world around, but it would have ended very strong and would have been the talk of the town as one of the best series on television/cable/streaming and people would have begged for more.
Instead, they kept going... and going... and going, and soon people were asking for it to be put out of its misery like a lobotomized three-legged dog suffering from epilepsy.
The show had some great moments after season 5, but mostly, the show never again recaptured the glory of those first 5 seasons. I feel the show should have ended after season 5, concluding on a high note ala Breaking Bad.
I've been watching the show on Netflix, and I'm up to season 14, episode 11: The show should have ended well before this point. The show feels like a sports athlete who stayed too long instead of retiring with grace, like watching Jordan play for Wizards in the early 00's or Babe Ruth play for the Boston Braves.
I think hindsight is a wonderful tool to have at our disposal. We see how this show has grown since those early days, and too have seen negative comments about the current S15 ending. I always categorically stated that I never wanted either or both brothers to die even if it were a type of Butch and Sundance as J2 had hoped for themselves. I also remember the hype after watching it live when Sam did come back from hell under that lamp post. My feelings were through the roof.
Many say S1 - 5 are the show's golden years, and have heard this said world wide many times since. There is I guess a grain of truth in there somewhere. However, some of the best season arc's have come flooding back into my memory since too. We had some great, strong writers who I feel delivered. I fondly remember Demon Dean; The first Blade, Purgatory, The Tablets, I can go on...
I very much prefer the Season 5 ending. I maybe in the minority but I really liked Dean with Lisa and Ben. Dean carried the weight of the family throughout the entire series which is why they got it wrong at the end of Season 15. Dean should have been the brother to get the happy ending. Just my personal opinion.
The problem is that the later seasons were just by the numbers SPN formula, and the show kept on repeating itself time and time again, which is why I'm glad it ended and am genuinely shocked people were so sad to see it go.
While I really enjoyed season 9 a lot, and thought 8,11,12,13 were enjoyable. Seasons 6,7,14, and 15 were excruciatingly painful to sit through. So much so that I have no desire to ever rewatch the show, and if I do, I might just stop after season 5 and call it a day.
Snoopy I would have put S10 in there because I think strongly that 9/10 are back to back and follow Dean's character from the Mark of Cain through to Demon Dean. Both of which are my fav seasons after the first five years.
Meh Season 10 was very meh to me. Middle of the road. Especially considering how good Season 9 was.
For me Seasons 6 and 7 were so bad I almost considering quitting right then and there. But Seasons 8 and 9 got me reinvested in the show to keep going. Then Season 10 was kind of another speed bump. But just my opinion.
Then 11,12,13 were filled with their highs and lows and kept me entertained despite being repetitive and the show spinning it's wheels
I still find it hard to watch S6/7 and still can't watch season 8 after Carver giving Sam a hard time I just hated the writing for that. Also Amelia rubbed me up the wrong way, and couldn't warm to her one bit. I just couldn't get over Sam not looking for Dean and the mobile phone saga where he just ignored them. 11,12 and 13 are like over my head. Odd episodes were strong but season arcs were weak. I expected much more from Andrew Dabb, as he used to be an awesome writer early seasons.
