Eileen
So, let's say you're given a rough idea of what has to happen in this episode to set up the final two. If you were told that Eileen had to die in this episode, and there was no way around it, how would you have done it differently?

shareWouldn't have changed a thing. There was no way to do her death well because she shouldn't have died.
It's like being told you have to bake a pie with arsenic. You can tweak the measurements, and add all the vanilla sugar you want, that pie is never going to be good.
I'm not sure. I think the fact that she died simply so we'd go, 'Wait a second, how does Ketch have a hellhound without Crowley knowing, and I hope Sam and Dean find out about this, because we care about her character,' was poor writing. That's what I find offensive. I wouldn't have particularly minded that she was killed if it had been done well with a lot of thought and drama involved. After all, it is supposed to be a horror show even though it's become more of a soap in recent years, but there are better ways it could've been done.
There are ways she could've been made to not look so weak. There are ways it could've been done, so I didn't wonder how she knew about the hellhound if she couldn't see it and couldn't hear it. Could she smell sulfur and noticed a branch move or see its breath? Did she see Ketch and run from him? Did she get the sense that something was following her and see it through thermal imaging equipment? Give us something to show us how capable she was. Other than to let us know that Crowley was involved with the BMoL, did it have to be a hellhound?
Could she have gotten seriously injured, found a way to get away long enough to leave a message, and then she's killed or dies of her injuries? Could she have gotten away to show us how smart she was, make it to the bunker, and then get killed in the shoot out? Imagine if she was dying at the end of the last episode when they got locked in the bunker. That would've been a better cliffhanger than just locking them inside the bunker for a few days to asphyxiate, because the question wouldn't be whether or not they'll get out. We all know they will. The question would've been do they get out in time to save her, and then they ultimately couldn't. I just think there are so many other ways it could've been done if it was necessary for whatever reason . . . not that it was.

I see what you mean. Taken with the season as a whole, it is a bitter pill to swallow. Eileen's death is just one of an almost endless barrage of writing fails this season (and the end of last season). Don't get me wrong. I dwell for a couple of hours about how terrible the writing is for an episode and then try to look forward, because I don't want to wallow too much in my own negativity, but now that we're at the end of the season . . . well, I've run out of road, and as far as I'm concerned, where I see the ending going isn't going to be worth what they put us through the rest of the season based on the set up in 12.21.

Well, I certainly wouldn't have given her a one off, just another Hunter death in the opening scene. She was well enough liked that it should have been handled in a way that gave her death some dignity. Maybe have Ketch take her out just after she finishes a hunt. And not with a hellhound tossing her around like a toy. That was just an insult to the character.
