Does Jennifer Lopez Speak Spanish?

I'm writing this on the "El Cantante" board, and not the Jennifer Lopez board because I think it's indirectly tied to the movie. Anyway, I recall the scene where Puchi is sitting at the dinner table with Hector and his sister Priscilla, and Priscilla speaks Spanish to her, and when she doesn't speak Spanish back, she says "Oh, I forgot, you don't speak Spanish". That scene got me to wondering whether, in real life, Jennifer Lopez speaks Spanish or not. Does anyone know?

Her Spanish is as rough as my English. I've been in America since December 2006 and some people told me I was going to lose my accent eventually, but I still have my mess-ups

Att: A Puerto Rican who writes in Spanish more than she talks.

shes acts like she cant talk spanish like a idiot...now that the usa is not really interested in her she now wants to stick to her latin background haha looser

That scene implies the feud between Ricans born in Puerto Rico and Ricans born in New York. That's what the director wanted to show. its real. Do not think about Jennifer, think about Puchie, she is the one that said it. Puchie was born in new York and Hector was Born in Puerto Rico.

she can't "talk" spanish?

The name of her production company is Nuyorican Films. That should tell you something. What she speaks is Spanglish. Spain spanish is different from Mexico is different from Puerto Rico is different from Cuban etc.... People of Puerto Rican heritage raised in America mainly Brooklyn (the capital of Puerto Rico is Brooklyn) will speak a watered down spanish. Watch Rosie Perez's documentary "Yo soy Boricua, Pa Que tu los Sepas". Explains a lot.

Yeah, I used to think she couldn't at all, but I saw some interview in spanish and was like, oh cool she does. She does pretty well. I think she speaks Spanish in the way Selena did like we saw in the movie. She maybe didn't know it as a kid, but then just learned along the way and maybe doesn't know some words here or there like when Selena did that interview and got nervous because she didn't know the word for excited. So I always thought that's probably something she could identify with in playing that part. For me for example i just think it's hard to learn Spanish while learning English at the same time because in America you're hearing English so much more. I mean of course it's easier when you come from the actual island. But yeah, that was an amazing brief scene. So real, I loved it.

No, for what I consider as "speaking Spanish", no she doesn't. If you take, let's say, 8 months of Spanish lessons, then you would speak like Jennifer Lopez. It is very rough and it is tough to understand what she means... just horrible grammar! But I guess she is trying. If you consider that she didn't speak a word of it just a few years ago, then yeah, she has improved a lot.

People go through change and growth in their lives.

I'm not a big J-Lo fan because I too thought she was denying or down playing her culture and background in favor of the "man of moment's" (i.e. Puff Daddy and Ben Afflect) culture and background.

As a black woman, I feel that anyone of any race or culture who does that has a lot of self hate.

Then I had the chance to read an article about her and her marriage to Marc Anthony and thought perhaps it is Marc Anthony who is bring her back to her true self.

I'm just about her age and know that growth and change makes you want to embrace all of the parts of who you are. I had never known her to speak spanish and in fact I thought I read that she never learned it growing up.

But, its good to see her trying to embrace all of heritage. Its so important to pass it on with pride to her children.
