El Cantante: Great effort

I belive this movie was a sincere effort to bring to the screen the life of the salsa legend Hector Lavoe. I due think it had some flaws but I appreciate the fact that people remember him enought to make a movie. Salsa isnt pop and will never sell like it because it doesnt appeal to the teenie boppers but the music will never die. I do not think that anyone will make a movie about Daddy Yankee in twenty years or that reggeaton will ever last that long. Fads fade. What did you guys think of the movie?

I am was and will always be a serious Salsero. Anway i really did like the movie, parts of it Had me hoping that it didnt go that way and other parts had me cheering. I will say it again as i have said it before, take anything away from this woman but she is a beautiful, incredible woman. i love her as an actress %100. Mark did a really good job in this. i enjoyed the film and learned alot.

The movie just aired on Cinemax and I was very surprised how good it was. I loved the music. Marc has an amazing voice.

I just saa it on Cinemax I am not sure why Lopez did not get a Academy Award nomination. I really believe because she is regarded as a singer people do not take her acting as seriously as they should. To me she is actress who sings, not the opposite. I believe her agents are not handling her correctly.

Marc Anthony has a devastating voice. Even though he looked nothing like Levoe he did a good job. I swear those guys who played Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colon were clones. And did I see Ymo Toro with his cuatro or was it another clone. Good casting. Very good movie. I use to hang out in the Cheeta and the Corso and the movie brought back memories. I understand another Hector movie is in the works.

Your right the actors who played Johnny and Willie were clones. This movie brought back so many memories for me to growing up in NYC. I remember seeing the Hector Lavoe off Broadway play in NYC years ago. Who Killed Hector Lavoe? Very good play.

I never heard of the play until recently. When was it on Broadway?

reply

Back in 2001. It was a limited run.

Ok. Thanks.

I thought it was a great movie as well. I'm not a die-hard salsera or anything, but I do like salsa music. I had heard Lavoe's music and his songs but was unfamiliar with his history. I thought this film did a good job of it. They tried to show how human he was and that as an artist, he was both extraordinarily talented, good hearted and sensitive.

The critics have not been kind to this movie. And I don't understand why. The movie may not have been perfect but most films that are out now, are far from it. In fact, El Cantante rises above a lot of the big-box office hits in terms of quality.

I also heard of the play on Broadway, and regret that I did not go to see it.
