DISGRACEFUL film!

Instead of painting a better picture of the legend that is "la voz" despite his druge problems (Walk The Line pulled it off). J.Lo just rode this movie to try to garner herself an Oscar. Its obvious she filled the movie with scenes of HER chewing up the scenery...whether it be talking (annoyingly), dancing backstage (shown every 30 seconds during one of the numbers), or showing her "acting chops"!

It was a vehicle to blow herself up which failed MISERABLY. too bad, because the soundtrack (except for HER ear destroying slow song) is PHENOMONAL!

Well, the story was told from Puchi's point of view. I agree the soundtrack is amazing.

I would have liked to have seen this film from Hector's point of view and at a slower pace. I mean there was a lot of things that bugged me about this movie. For one: as someone who was not around in the 60's - 70's and as someone who knew lil about Lavoe...I felt lost and almost rushed when watching El Cantante. In the first 8 minutes of the movie Puchi was scooping blow into his nose, but they never show how he got so bad into drugs. Two: everthing was very touch and go and the film left a lot of Hector's career milestones out. This film didn't help me learn anything about Hector the man, or the singer. I had to ask my father to clue me in. My papa was a big salsa fan in those days and he told me that Puchi was a b***. He said that Puchi was the other woman and not Hector's main girl like it is depicted in this bio. That Hector had a son with another woman named Carmen before he met Puchi. On the day of the baby's baptizum Puchi called and infromed Carmen that she was having Hector's baby too. Anyway, I would have liked to have seen some of the stuff my papa told me in the the movie. But like you said this was Puchi's view on what happened. So they should have titled this La Puchi.

The MAIN reason I consider this movie DISGRACEFUL. Sure it was Puchi's point of view...but the movie isn't called "La Puta"...digo..."La Puchi", its called El Cantante...and Hector said YO, soy El Cantante...so it should've been a movie about Hector!

Since J.H0E produced it, I fully blame HER for the massacring of Hector's autiobiography. I reiterate, it was SO obvious she made this movie for HER & HER ALONE to reek the benefits! Everytime the movie got a little interesting (Ex. the scene in the bar shortly before their son's death), J.H0E managed to edit herself in & single handedly RUIN the scene.

I've lost what little respect I had for J.H0E...I thought Anthony was an excellent Hector, but he wasn't given the opportunity to shine.

That was my point. Puchi seemed like the self-centered, delusional type that would have given herself more credit than she really deserved; because of this, the movie focused too much on the "relationship" and not Hector Lavoe as a human being and a performer. The problem with biopics is that they are never objective. There is always one person who feels they are qualified enough to tell a performer's story and the focus is never really on the performer but on the storyteller's relationship with the performer. I would have liked to see more of Lavoe's tumultuous life, which ultimately may have led to his drug use. I don't believe that people start using heroin just because they are celebrities and it's readily availabe. There is almost always some underlying reason they decide to delve into it. The movie sort of mentioned that something tragic happened to Lavoe's brother, but this topic was never really explored. Yes, someone else should have produced this film.

I'll have to agree with your comments Jorgito for the most part. Though I did enjoy the movie. I REALLY loved the music. It made me want to learn about the real Hector Lavoe. Shame I don't know whmore about him, especially being that I enjoy Salsa music very much. Lopez was getting on my nerves. Seeing her in every scene would have been fine had the movie been about Puchi. It really gave us little insight on who Lavoe was and his climb to stardom IMO. I'm buying the soundtrack because I LOVE it and Marc Anthony's voice!

Ya know - the first time I saw the film...I thought the same as you - That it was too much Jennifer...until I watched it again and it was clear that this was from Pucci's point of view and this film did a bang up job of telling Hector's life from Pucci's point of view.

You see - what a fellow poster wrote here was right on - Pucci really thought she did more for Hector's career than Hector himself and Jennifer playing Pucci carried that off well throughout the film - the name of a film - well - that may not have even been what Jennifer and Mark wanted but what the studio wanted to get distribution of what is ultimately Pucci's telling of her husband's life.

As for Hector's point of view - we'll never know THAT now shall we? His tale will be told by those who knew him, but never from Hector. Pucci was SUPPOSED to give that recollection at this interview but -- well -- look at the film and understand it for what it is. For example notice that Pucci DID play around too, stay out all night clubbing/partying, had excessive drug use, etc., as well but WE never saw that because, ahem, Pucci would never go THERE. She did tell her tale from HER perspective as his wife for 20 years (and skimmed over the other women, other kids, ya know! It's Pucci.)

Regardless - the soundtrack is wonderful ...I have to give it to Jennifer and Anthony for getting even THIS version of Hector's life to the screen.
