4.8? You gotta be kidding me

The JLO haters are giving this a 1/10 just because they hate her! I never understood who could hate such a beautiful AND talented woman, she deserved at least an Oscar nomination

Well, this gringa really enjoyed the film. Great direction, style, music. It did bogg down a bit for me about half way through (a tighter script may have been in order perhaps?) I speak and understand very little Spanish but this movie made me want to rush out and buy music from both Marc Anthony and Hector!!!!

Agreed. I am surprised at the low ratings. The cinematography was very sultry and nice and told a great story that everyone should know. I gave it a 10.

You're *beep* kidding right? An oscar nomination? lol
I like J.LO but no, she didn't deserve anything for this movie. Her acting was really pretentious. But she has given better performances before though (Selena, Border town, Out of Sight etc,) maybe the material was too challenging for her??
I actually liked the movie because the cinematography and music was great. The direction and editing were good. But the performances were only "Okay."

I gave it a 6/10

Probably because the film did no justice to the legendary Hector Lavoe. All it covered was his drug life which had little to no significance to his music. The film focused solely on his wife Puchi who was NEVER involved with his music or around during concerts, photo shoots, or studio recordings. She was a nasty bitch who cared very little about Hector and more about his money. It was stated in a very detailed documentary by ALL of Hector's friends and family members that his wife was the main reason of his depression (something they only mentioned very briefly in the film - yet failed to give reason what so ever)

Also, Hector moved to New York when he was 16, not 30 like it appeared in the film (or if Marc Anthony expected us to believe he was 16 in that first scene, he needs a reality check!) A lot of his greatest songs were never mentioned. Also, hector had more than one child. He had a son and daughter who are very much alive today, with a women name Carmen while he was dating Puchi. And he loved his other children very much. There is a video on youtube of his son and daughter stating that this film taught NOTHING of their father's life.

In fact; everyone involved in Hector's life back when he was alive, despised the film. Even Willie Colon wrote on his website saying that they "missed a great opportunity with this one."

Jennifer Lopez is just a greedy actress who abused her power as producer of the film and demanded all the screen time in the world, telling a story of a women who had NO significance to Hector's success and died a LIAR after her interview which did not check out when other's close to Hector heard it.

And I like J.Lo, but she proved her greed with this one.

Oscar nomination my ass!

Lopez and Marc Anthony were both very good in this film, in fact, they were nigh-on perfect in their roles, but the problem here was a one-dimensional script that laboured on Puchi and Lavoe's drug use, and perfunctory direction. The script needed to find ways into their relationship and allow Lopez and Anthony to create fully realised three-dimensional characters. This escaped them, despite the commitment to their roles. Furthermore, the director needed to move back a little and not force a documentary style when the framing of the narrative was being done that way in the first place. El Cantante does miss the mark, but not on the acting, which is never less than very good. But the script needed to offer more and the director had should have allowed the performances room to speak without being encumbered by a fussy hand.
