Having a dispute in front of staff?

I can understand getting caught up in the heat of a moment etc, but do people really act as if their staff are invisible? I am a very private person and old-school (as the saying goes), but this element made it uncomfortable for me. The staff have feelings too and this would be embarrassing for them.

And wouldn't it compromise their positions?

I'm guessing it was to illustrate how self-absorbed both Amanda and Ed Burns' characters were. In comparison, Iris was very friendly and warm to both the gardener and housekeeper/maid, even calling them by their first names.

One thing I loved about the dispute scene was when the gardener was shaking his head at Ed Burns' character, hinting that he should definitely *not* tell Amanda the truth about his relationship with the secretary!

You are so right. And weren't Amanda's business staff awkward in their relations with her?
I loved that subtle bit too, when he shakes his head.

Contrast Amanda's self-absorbed B S with Iris's easy relationship with Amanda's house staff is huge. I have enjoyed quite a lot of Nancy Meyer's screenplays, but wasn't sure who she was having the biggest dig at here. Certainly, Hollywood got a whack. Miles was pleasant and respectful in contrast to Ed Burn's character though.

The fight shows that Amanda's relationship with her employees is more intimate and just better than her relationship with Ethan.

Ethan, her now ex- is just the quintessential cheating jerk. Her employees are not afraid to approach her even though she's in a bad moment. They pay attention to her instructions and give her feed back.

All she did with Ethan was recognize his two-timing and hit him in the face. Ethan is so stupid that he ignored the quiet advice from the landscaper to not say anything.

Something I didn't understand, it seemed like the staff welcomed themselves into her house? and she was wearing pyjamas while meeting with them? Maybe she had a very close, non-professional relationship with them

reply

The studio was attached to the house.

reply

Yes, Ethan mentions Amanda putting the studio in her house. Bristol and Ben were probably at work (flexible working hours would make sense) in the business part of the house, which most likely had good soundproofing, but when Bristol left the studio to get Amanda's input, they became aware of the confrontation between Amanda and Ethan.

While I myself am very private and tend to try hiding my emotions and definitely wouldn't want to have a fight in front of other people, not everyone is like that.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

Thanks for your response and what you wrote is so true. My generation (old!!), would consider that to be very bad manners!

ps. A place where it never rained wouldn't be too 'magical' for me, I love it!!

This is Los Angeles...Hollywood.

par for the course.
