Best Foreign Film (Mexico)?

Can anyone explain why it was nominated for Best Foreign Film from Mexico at the Oscars and not Best Foreign Film from Spain? The whole film was shot in Spain.

And why are these countries attached to this film? Spain | Mexico | USA

reply

There's some good information here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film

The main points:

-- A film in this category are submitted for consideration by a country (in this case, Mexico) as the best of that's country's films for that year. Each country may submit only one film.

-- The film must be primarily in language other than English and must be shown first in the country submitting the film.

In this case, the film is best categorized as Mexican because Guillermo del Toro, the film's director, writer, and lead producer, is from Mexico. Where the film is shot has little to do with it.

Thank you. Also, why are there three countries attached that film, are those the countries you produced it?

reply

I don't know where you're seeing these three countries, but the production companies for the film are based in both Mexico and Spain.
