Tense dinner scene
Why was the dinner scene with the guests so uncomfortable?
Examples: when carmen explains how she met the captain?
Also when a guest mentions the captain's dad

When I saw that scene, it seemed clear to me that Carmen had a very romantic idea of how she and the captain came to be together. And although it's kind of hard to put my finger on why, I couldn't help thinking that what really happened was that the captain saw her, lusted after her, arranged for her husband to be ... removed, and that now that has slaked his lust on her, her only real value to him is as a brood mare. He's now embarrassed by her naiveté and resents the romantic portrait she paints of him.
I suspect that she has this view of him because the loss of her husband during a period of such national turmoil made the future seem bleak and uncertain both for her and her daughter, so in her mind, she has cast the captain as the knight in shining armor who saved her from that.

Strip away the phony tinsel of Hollywood and you find the real tinsel underneath.
Thank you!!!!! I kind of thought he executed her husband as well.
What about when the guest mentioned the captain's father? Lol now I'm wondering if he killed him too..
I just finished watching and I was wondering the same thing. What you wrote is a brilliant observation!

My top 100 http://www.imdb.com/li
I thought it was weird, she gets asked how they met and then he basically insults her in front of everyone for answering the question. What a douchebag.
shareHis dad died in battle. He didn't kill him as I'm thinking he was very young.
I just think he wanted to out do his father as a soldier
My take was that the dad died in battle and was overall an honorable man.
However, the captain is quite obviously evil and cruel, killing people from the back, etc making him an dishonorable person. Him fixing the dads watch, to me, shows that he's "trying" or faking to be like his dad, but he either doesn't know how to, or is just unable to be a good person.
