I knew it was rated R, but I think it was just trivial violence, not as sadistic as this movie portrayed. The scene where the Captain knocked the nose flat of the peasant is just too sick, also the scene where the captain stitches himself up. This movie is sick even for adults. Very good movie though just didn't expect the violence..

I had the same reaction. Although I was familiar with Del Toro's earlier movies, I thought this film wasn't going to be any more violent than say, the Hellboy movies. Certainly I wasn't disappointed by how vicious the violence was, but to say that I was surprised by it would be a bit of an understatement.
