1.) Pan's Labyrinth
1.) The Shining
2.) Dozen's of others

Pan's Labyrinth has got to be one of my most favorite films ever, i rarely give a film 10/10 but this film deserves it.

It's like how i give 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' 10/10 for the N64 as the greatest game ever. Now if this was turned into a movie, i would be like wow.

reply

As a huge fan of film The Shining and Pan's Labyrinth are currently tied as my No.1. Just impossible to put anything else in that category. I like your taste.

Secondary films include:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Goodfellas
The Grey
A Bittersweet Life
The Place Beyond the Pines

I can't make a top 10 since I love so many movies equally. I will just list 10 for you I guess, in no particular order.

1.High Tension
2.Cloud Atlas
3.All James Bond films
4.Hanna
5.Another Earth
6.Black Swan
7.Psycho
8.Mean Girls
9.Titanic
10.Scream

In no particular order...

-The Dark Knight Trilogy (i consider them one big, long unit)
-Inception
-The Prestige
-Hot Fuzz
-School of Rock (why not... it isn't the greatest movie but it makes me laugh and its more well done than most comedies)
-Whiplash
-Dead Poets Society
-The Social Network
-The Shining
-The Truman Show

I do, however have a BUTTLOAD of other favorites (about 30, haha!). However, a lot of thought goes into what I choose to say is a favorite. I'm a major movie nerd and I watch movies all the time, so I've seen so many at this point that the fact that I've gotten it under 50 favorites is impressive!

I actually love your list! I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, but I'm gonna start it in about 10 minutes! (that's why im on the message boards) I haven't seen the machinist either, but I'm actually dying to see it, and since it's on netflix, I will watch it asap. Memento, interstellar, shutter island, inception, and the prestige are all favorite movies of mine. I didn't love Goodfellas, but I respect it greatly and completely understand why someone would love it. Usual suspects is great, I love it. And I haven't seen Snatch yet, but I like Guy Ritchie, so I'll put that movie on my radar.

And how did you like the movie??

* Rembrandt "the crying man" Brown * Cry Like a Man * Sliders *

I actually didn't love it. I thought it was well done on a technical level, but it just wasn't for me. Maybe my expectations were a bit too high, I don't know.

Things I liked: the storyline with the stepdad, some of the scenes in the labyrinth, cinematography, the basic idea

Things I didn't really like: the fact that it was Spanish (sounds silly, but it's harder to enjoy the movie when I'm reading subtitles), I wish there were more fantasy elements in the movie, I thought some scenes were a little unrealistic (I realize this is a fantasy movie, but I mean some scenes not taking place in the labyrinth/other fantasy places; for example, when the girl tells her moms stomach a 3 min long story... I just found that and other scenes unrealistic.)

Overall, I give it a 6.5 out of 10, which on IMDB I give it a 7. I did enjoy many aspects of it, but I guess I just don't completely "get" it, like some other people on the message boards seem to.

The mother asked Ofelia to tell a story to her brother, because Ofelia enjoyed telling stories, and because it let her mother relax and enjoy the sound of her daughter's voice. But there are a lot of people who play music for their unborn children, so it isn't really all that farfetched, especially for a girl like Ofelia, to tell a story to the baby bump.

I'm sorry that the subtitles made it more difficult for you to follow or enjoy the movie, but what's the alternative? Not allow people from other countries to make movies in their own languages? Not allow anyone to make a movie unless it is made in English or dubbed in English? Perish the thought. I don't mind subtitles, but I HATE, LOATHE, ABHOR, and DESPISE dubbing, even when it's done by the original actors. I can understand why it might hamper your enjoyment for the movie to be in another language, but that's not a flaw in the movie. It's just an unavoidable consequence of having more than one language in the world.

So what other scenes seemed unrealistic for you?

Well... With that scene that I mentioned, I think I just found it kinda silly compared to the more serious tone of the film. I suppose that it just depends on your point of view, but to me it seems strange that an 11ish year old girl woul tell a 2 minute story to her moms stomach. I know if my mom had asked me to do that, I would think its kinda bizzare. But again, that depends on your point of view.

And as for the subtitles... I've loved several foreign movies, and I'm glad that other countries make movies as well. I'm just saying that it's sometimes difficult to focus on the scenery, actors, and whatever else is going on while I'm busy trying to read. I'm not sayin it's the deal breaker for the movie to me, im saying that it's a contributing factor. In the grand scheme of things the subtitles really mean nothing to me, it's just kind of a nuisance.

And as for other scenes that seemed unrealistic... It's not so much specific scenes, but more the dialogue between Ophelia and anyone else. I'm reasonably young so I remember very well what it's like to be her age and I feel like the way her mother an her talked just seemed kind of strange to me. But once again, that's just my point of view, because I was raised in a different family with different parents than you or anyone else.

And just to clarify... I didn't hate the movie! I greatly enjoyed many parts of it!!! It was super well done, but it's just not my type of movie. It's not that there's anything wrong with it, it's that it just isn't quite my taste. And not everyone has to agree on everything otherwise it would be a pretty boring world we live in!

reply

I hope I didn't come across as upset with you. I don't expect everyone to like everything I like. I just enjoy discussing movies and understanding other people's points of view. When someone tells me how they see a movie, sometimes I'll realize that I missed something that they just showed me. I like that.

Also, I think another reason they had the scene of Ofelia telling the story to the baby bump is that it was a way to show that Ofelia already felt affectionate toward her unborn half-sibling, no matter how she felt about its father. It was pretty plain that she did not like her stepfather. At all. And after all, there aren't many ways in a movie to show that someone feels attached to an unborn child. It's a lot easier if the director can show the actor feeding, bathing, dressing, and playing with the infant.
