The Ending
Me and my friend were confused to how it ended. I assumed he decided to pull out of the water and lived but she states he died. Please help clarify.

His life flashed before his eyes and he saw the light. He decided he wanted to live.

I think it's physically impossible to drown yourself. Because no matter how bad you want to die, your body automatically reacts and goes for air.
So I didn't get this ending. What was he trying to do?
And the mother was a psycho overreacter.
That's a bunch of bull about the mother, and he wasn't trying to drown himself.
