**SPOILERS** You know what would have REALLY surprised me at the end?

Is if the two of them had escaped, the credits rolled, and there was no indication whatsoever that the infection had spread elsewhere. It really would have shocked me if they hadn't shifted the camera to the satellite view and shown that the government was planning another quarantine, or if they hadn't shown the little news clip during the credits.

I know, the effect is supposed to be "Oh no! It's not over! How sad!" But for those of us who've seen dozens of horror movies, the effect is really more like "Oh, God! Does every horror movie have to end the exact same way?"

It was still better than I expected, though.

yeah I know what you mean with the ending, I was hoping the satellite would catch someone else escaping the blast zone maybe a truck with crazies on it or something! hope there is a sequel would be great if it showed you the couple settling back into their lives only for it all to start up again! would have to have olyphant and the wife though in it, they were brilliant and actually brought some emotional attachment.

That ending may have been predicable. But do you know what would be worst than that ending....?

They wake up and it was aaaall a dream!

reply

How about this for an even worse ending:
The group decides that they can't survive the situation. With three bullets in his gun, David euthanizes Judy (w/unborn baby), Becca and Russell. Over come with anguish, David repeatedly tries to kill himself with the empty gun. Just as he is preparing himself to be taken out by a group of what he believes to be crazies approaching, the military shows up and saves the day.

Oh man too true! But you know what even though the ending of the mist was emotionally bad, it made the whole film even more epic.

reply

People talk crap about the ending to The Mist, but at least it was an original ending. I'm sure he later committed suicide anyway b/c he couldn't live with those moments right before the military arrived.

"The hideousness of that foot will haunt my dreams forever."

reply

God damn, that would just be a HORRIBLE ending to a movie. How could you possible come up with something so demented.

reply

No, it would have been a better ending. at least they were original.

reply

no, not original Mist did the same thing, guy with passengers kills them, just second before military arrives...

reply

Hmm, I was waiting for either the husband or wife to be effected and off the other. Know one damn thing: that baby ain't still alive in her stomach after all that activity. And if it is, mucho brain-damage.

"If I had ya where I wanted ya, they'd be pumpin your ass full of formaldehyde!"

reply

In the original ending for the movie, David was infected.

Saito: I bought the airline. It seemed neater.

mcfly-31, I think you've watched too many movies. Babies are very well protected in the womb by tons of amniotic fluid. All those old movies where a pregnant woman falls down a staircase or some such accident and loses a baby were all hogwash. A woman would have to be in a very serious car crash (like impact hitting the car and the woman dead or unable to move) or something else of that magnitude in order to badly damage or lose a baby. Granted, the semi rolls over with Judy inside, but although they are a little banged up, it doesn't seem like she or her husband are too badly hurt. They both get up and walk away.

reply

Agreed. I had to groan at the completely overdone dun-dun-DUNNNNNN! ending. Though I was absolutely sure that we'd get through everything, arrive at the light at the end of the tunnel and find that one of the couple was infected and killed/had to be killed by the other. So I'm glad they didn't go that route.

reply

I must be really twisted. I kept thinking that at the end of the movie, the wife would double over in pain, and then the baby would eat its way out of her stomach, ala "Alien". Of course, she'd have to be much further along in her pregnancy to carry that one off.

Would be kind of a cool way start to begin a follow up movie though. LOL

reply

Yeah, almost every horror film seems to have an "it's not over" moment for a possible sequel. Decades ago that was a suspensful ending but it's so cliched now, it's like a joke.

Yes, an actual ending without the satellite would have been suprising.

reply

Thats not just horror movies. Almost every movie I've seen(that has a sequal) has something at the end to indicate that there will be another. Ex: Iron man, sherlock holmes, ...a lot of comic book movies lol, but there are sooo many from every genre. It gives the viewer something to look forward to!

reply

Yeah, this kind of ending has now become rather predictable.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

The ending was traditional, but I had fun anyway.

The ending wasn't that the infection had spread?
It was that they had escaped, and they were dirty, bloody and struggling to walk etc. therefore the satellite and military immediately assumed the infection had spread, when it hadn't

reply

I thought she was going to find out that the water she had drunken came from the water source in their town and she would end up getting sick. But then I guess those two were immune. Or that when they got to the next town everyone was already sick. But yeah, I didn't mind this ending.
