I understand that the director is trying to make a statement about how violent video games are with that sequence, but the game looks so over the top and fake that it's cringeworthy. Clearly Spike Lee doesn't understand the concept of subtlety.

I agree. But I don’t think the filmmakers had a choice. They probably were not able to use footage of an actual video game because of property rights. They had to rush the job for the purpose of the scene. I bet they wanted to use Grand Theft Auto.
