shareThey may think they're safe...but they're still being watched. The Hills Still Have Eyes or The Hills Have More Eyes would have been a good title for the sequel. Even if they weren't being watched (that scene isn't in in the original) they're still not safe because they're literally stranded in the desert with no shelter and limited food and water. The ending of the original is just as open-ended. IIRC, the screen turns red and credits roll immediately after Doug kills the last of the cannibals with a blow to the head, as he realizes he's become just as bad as they are (at least that's my interpretation).
