Amy's character at the beginning of the movie

was so annoying to me.Her behavior was extremely childish.Always being critical towards David.Throwing the firework out of the window once David noticed it makes her happy. Then she gives him the middle finger. Her character seemed like it was written for a bratty teenager not a grown married women. At least when she was aware how dangerous their situation was she became a lot less irritating. That's my opinion on Amy.What did the rest of you think of Amy's character at the beginning?

Absolutely agree, came here looking for this.... she doesn't get much better further on in the movie either

I agree that she was sort of bitchy in the beginning. HOWEVER, I think it was made pretty clear that she was not typically a bitchy person but a mom whose child died and who was seriously suffering from that loss. Even she apologizes to him during the midst of all of the stuff going on for how she was being.

I actually get the feeling that you are very young and perhaps you haven't experienced enough of life yet to have at least some empathy or even just sympathy or a bit of understanding for someone who has experienced a horrendous situation and trauma which losing a child must be.

I tend to agree with the OP. While the other posters make valid points, Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale's characters BOTH lost their child. Wilson's character handled it much more maturely. In fact, although he did stand up for himself when she was bitching at him, I was thinking to myself that if I had been him, I would be handling her behavior a lot more firmly than he did lol.

It is true, though, that different people handle situation's and life's challenges differently. The other posters are probably right that before the tragedy, she probably acted a lot differently. Obviously the two had a connection at some point or they wouldn't have gotten married.

However, overall I still felt like she could have acted a lot more mature and a lot less bitchy. And on top of that, she was pretty much worthless for 98% of the movie. While Luke Wilson is thinking of possible ways to get out alive, she is panicking and acting like a helpless child. I don't care who you are, if you find yourself in that situation, you need to compose yourself and get into the most focused, determined frame of mind you have ever been in, and figure out the best strategy to try to make it out. Of course when you first realize what is going on, you're going to be in shock for a minute or two and not sure wtf to do. But after that you need to quickly, ASAP, man the *beep* up (or woman up in Kate's case), and figure out a plan. You may succeed, you may not, but you need to at least make your best attempt. She simply sat in the corner and cried, completely frazzled and useless, while Luke Wilson had to lead the way the entire time and try to think up ways to get out. And at the same time that he was doing all that, he had to hold her hand the entire way and try to comfort her to keep her from becoming even more of a nervous wreck. If it had been up to Kate, they would have just sat in the room and cried helplessly as the killers moved in and made them their newest victims.

As with most tv or movies, the man is oh so wrong and the woman belittles him all during it. Notice he was polite all through it and she was just childish as can be. So of course she lives and he probably doesn't.
